Jeffrey M. Sherman is a creditors' rights and bankruptcy attorney practicing in the greater Washington, DC, region, where he has handled bankruptcy matters for clients throughout the nation for more than 35 years. He works on behalf of creditors and debtors of all types, trustees, creditors' committees, and parties affected by bankruptcy proceedings (landlords, asset purchasers, litigation defendants), including related bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy litigation.  Jeff also handles civil and commercial litigation matters.  

Jeff's clients range from multi-million dollar enterprises to individuals. His practice has included representing real estate developers, real estate lenders and mortgagees, insurance companies regarding the bankruptcies of their insureds as well as claimants against policies, and providing bankruptcy and debtor-creditor advice to business and litigation attorneys. He also has served as a bankruptcy trustee. Jeff is skilled at making complex issues comprehensible, and combines in-depth knowledge of bankruptcy law with a creative approach to problem solving. Over 35 years, Jeff has been published on a variety of topics related to bankruptcy, including involuntary bankruptcy, Chapter 13 eligibility, client management, international insolvency under Chapter 15, etc.

Jeff received his Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from City University of New York, Queens College in 1978, and his Juris Doctor from The George Washington University Law School in 1981. Since then, he has been fortunate to be recognized and awarded for his work as a bankruptcy practitioner, teacher and mentor (see recent recognitions, below).

Beginning 2003, Jeff trained volunteer attorneys through the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center on how to handle consumer bankruptcy cases.  Jeff also served in 2009 on the Local Rules Committee of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia, a request renewed by the D.C. Bankruptcy Court in 2016.  Jeff is also an AV-rated attorney through Martindale-Hubbell, holding that distinction for over 30 years.

Since 2014, Jeff has taught new continuing legal education (CLE) classes for the DC Bar, notably on the subjects of creditors' rights in bankruptcy and related bankruptcy litigation and business strategies. He has also been invited to provide in-house bankruptcy training to various offices and agencies, including the Office of General Counsel of the General Accounting Office.  He authored much of the training materials used in these seminars as well.

In 2013, Jeff helped organize and initiate (and has also served continuously as the Director of) the Bankruptcy Assistance Center at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia, where he supervises the operations of a walk-in clinic designed to assist pro se individuals address their bankruptcy questions,, concerns and filings.  In 2016, Jeff also assisted in the establishment of the Northern Virginia Bankruptcy Assistance Center as well.  Both BACs also involve substantial contributions from and training of law students attending local law schools.
